How to follow the evidence behind an explanation

A repeatable method for turning primary, official, and scholarly evidence into clear public explanations.

1. Begin with a reader job#

Begin with the exact question and the explanation a reader needs. Check whether an existing article already answers it and how a new lesson would connect to that work.

A keyword variation is not a page job. If the answer belongs in an existing section, table, diagram, or downloadable record, that is where it stays.

2. Define terms and boundaries#

Words such as bank, deposit, credit, money changer, public bank, and central bank are not treated as timeless equivalents.

Each project records:

  • operational definitions;
  • historical or local terminology;
  • translations that may impose modern concepts;
  • geographic and temporal scope;
  • topics the page excludes;
  • current facts that require a fresh official check.

Function comes before label. Storage is not automatically deposit-taking; lending is older than banking; a payment company is not necessarily a bank; and a public bank is not automatically a central bank.

3. Build a source manifest#

Sources are collected in this order of preference:

  1. primary and official records;
  2. peer-reviewed, university-press, and institutional scholarship;
  3. high-quality specialist material;
  4. general secondary orientation for minor context.

Each source gets a stable ID, full title, author or institution, publication, date, direct URL, evidence tier, claims supported, access date, archive field, and volatility label. Source IDs connect article claims to inspectable records rather than serving as a substitute for the source itself.

A source ID remains stable when a URL moves. A replacement source must be at least as strong as the evidence it replaces.

4. Match the source to the claim#

A citation must support the sentence, not merely discuss the same broad topic. The review asks:

  1. Does the source state or demonstrate the claimed fact?
  2. Do the date, place, institution, and legal setting match?
  3. Is the page quoting another source that should be checked directly?
  4. Does the source present evidence, interpretation, or institutional self-description?
  5. Is its publication date suitable for a current claim?
  6. Has uncertainty been preserved?

Corporate histories can establish what an institution says about itself. They cannot alone prove that it is the world's first, oldest, safest, or continuously unchanged bank.

5. Audit material claims#

Important claims are classified internally as:

  • directly documented;
  • strongly supported scholarly interpretation;
  • disputed;
  • plausible but uncertain;
  • unsupported or unsuitable for publication.

First, oldest, invention, continuity, and transmission claims receive a dedicated record containing the candidate, evidence, competing interpretation, confidence, approved wording, and current-status requirement.

The public prose translates those controls into ordinary language. Uncertainty should be clear without forcing readers to decode an internal taxonomy.

6. Separate extraction from prose#

Research notes distinguish what a source directly documents, what its author interprets, what SmartBanker.org infers, which date and place apply, where other sources disagree, and whether the fact is durable.

The draft is then written from that record. A plausible sentence does not fill a missing source.

7. Compare institutions by function#

Historical institutions are compared through documented functions: safekeeping, account administration, payment and transfer, credit, maturity and liquidity transformation, risk allocation, money issue or transmission, and public finance.

A modern analogy may clarify a function. It is labeled as an analogy, not proof of institutional identity or direct historical descent.

8. Build structured research assets#

Where evidence supports it, source notes become timelines, claims audits, comparison matrices, crisis-response records, institution tables, glossaries, or map-ready data.

Each record needs a stable ID, source references, version, and qualification field where interpretation matters. Selected datasets are public for inspection; internal strategy, QA, SERP samples, and unpublished research do not become search pages.

9. Write in answer layers#

Research pages are designed in layers:

  1. direct answer;
  2. concise explanation;
  3. evidence or mechanism;
  4. comparative or chronological depth;
  5. method and source notes;
  6. relevant downloadable data.

This lets a general reader obtain a useful answer quickly while keeping verification available.

10. Review by scope#

The editorial process examines definitions, chronology, geography, source fit, conflicting evidence, numbers, current facts, page overlap, image provenance, accessibility and commercial conflicts. Automated checks can expose inconsistencies and technical errors; passing them does not certify every historical or financial interpretation.

Claims that cannot be supported confidently should be narrowed, removed or referred for appropriate specialist review. A human reviewer is named only after performing a documented review, and the visible label states its scope. No independent human specialist review is claimed for these articles.

11. Page and data checks#

The checks address whether:

  • title, H1, opening answer, canonical, and intent must align;
  • internal links and source citations must resolve;
  • schema must match visible content;
  • source URLs and current facts must have a fresh check;
  • tables and diagrams must work on keyboard and small screens;
  • factual, identity, contact, and date placeholders must be gone;
  • image rights and attribution must be recorded;
  • privacy and legal text must match the actual implementation.

These technical and editorial checks serve different purposes. A working link does not prove that its destination supports the claim, and valid structured data does not establish expertise.

12. AI assistance#

AI may assist with source organization, comparison, outlines, consistency checks, data transformation, drafting from verified notes, and code validation. It is never a citable authority.

AI output needs checks for invented detail, collapsed uncertainty, chronology errors, false quotation, source mismatch and overly confident current claims. 13. Measurement and revision#

Search Console is the primary post-launch search record. Reader use of tables, diagrams, datasets, source links, corrections, and citations provides additional evidence.

Each article has one query job. Query-page overlap is reviewed before a new URL is proposed. A material title, template, schema, or internal-link change should have a documented hypothesis, measurement period, success condition, and reversal plan.

14. Limits and reproducibility#

Historical records are uneven by language, institution, region, and social group. Official archives may reflect institutional self-presentation. Scholarship changes. The oldest surviving document is not necessarily the first practice.

The correct response to a gap is to state it, narrow the claim, or defer publication. A research release should preserve the source-manifest version, datasets, claim decisions, article version, QA result, and correction history so another reader can inspect how a conclusion was reached.
